If you’re familiar with the Curly Girl (CG) method, you know the basic principles—that you don’t wash your hair with standard sulfate shampoos but wash with conditioner, apply product when your hair is super wet, don’t touch it while it’s drying, and so on. These are all great foundational principles to follow in your curly hair care routine.

However…like anything else, this method isn’t perfect. Many people have claimed the curly girl method ruined my hair. As it has evolved over the years, curlies have discovered a few things here and there that could be better—and that not all curls are created equal.

When I opened my first salon back in 1999 (20 years ago this year, woohoo!), I was beyond PUMPED to focus on curls. I had researched, gathered, and concocted what I thought would be the ideal combo of products from several different lines to tame frizz into curls. The fact is, you can’t put every curl in a box. While CG warns us all to stay far, far away from silicones, sometimes that just isn’t possible. Besides, not all silicones have the same effect on hair! Some of them are actually beneficial. There are some silicones that are water soluble and some that aren’t…and trust me, if you use the non-water-soluble ones and try to “no-poo” your hair…just ew.

So while CG isn’t all bad, I’m a firm believer that you have to do what works for you and your curls.
