When I was growing up, curls were not cool, and kids were cruel.
Celebrities in the 80s with straight hair were mainly the ones considered beautiful: Christie Brinkley, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer…you didn’t see too many celebs in the limelight who had naturally curly hair, and even if they did, it was usually styled to look like it wasn’t. As for me, I was told I had “witch hair” in high school. Just what you want to hear as a tenth grader, right? I experienced many years of being curl shamed mercilessly.
The other day, I Googled “curly hair” and came across an old article that talked about “why most people consider curly hair ugly.” If you grew up in the 70s, 80s, 90s, even in the early 2000s…the mindset was that naturally curly hair wasn’t “done.” You had to attack it with some form of heat in order to make it look “presentable” or cut it short to “control the curl.” What a crock!
Guess what, though? Today, we are the cool kids! Curly hair is no longer to be shamed or made fun of…it’s to be envied! We’ve come a long way since the big, frizzy hair of the 80s and the stick-straight looks of the 90s. Just take a look at Sarah Jessica Parker’s curl evolution over the years! And now she’s a curly hair icon.
And you know what else? It’s okay to be frizzy…but these days, you don’t have to be! For those of us who have lived through the horrors of the 80s and 90s, the curl shaming and mocking, the teasing and laughing…it’s that much sweeter to be the cool kid now. It’s a special club that only those of us with natural texture can be a part of! I mean, we earned it. And today, even the edgy, frizzy look is embraced if you go for it. Who would’ve thought!? If we could go back in time and show the naysayers a modern-day photo, they would’ve adopted the look much sooner. Those snooty comments like “Big hair was in in the eighties” wouldn’t fly!
So today, our curl shame has turned into curl fame! Wear it proudly—better yet, flaunt it. Enjoy being the cool kid, knowing that the kids of today will never know the embarrassment we experienced. Controlled Chaos exists solely to minimize frizz and maximize fearlessness!
